Our SEO pro and recently-become iPhone owner, Mo, combines his expertise to perform an SEO-related iPhone app review…

The holidays are around the corner and surely everyone is thinking of buying Christmas gifts. I’m sure everyone has heard a lot about the iPhone and its hype, so I thought it would be a good time to do an SEO-related iPhone app review, so if you are thinking of buying an iPhone or iPod touch for your SEO-savvy friend, this post might help you to make sure these gadgets will be more than just a phone or a MP3 player to the lucky receiver – it might help you justify the price you pay for it a little more as well.

Let’s get down to business. The application I am going to talk about is called proSEO and it seems to be the only noteworthy SEO application in app store till date. You can get to the app by visiting this iTunes store link. First things first: this app costs £8.99 or $14.99 if you reside in the U.S. Below are some of the features this app offers:

- The full HTML source code of the page
- The page’s META data (including META keywords and descriptions)
- The information about <title> tag.
- The anchor tags
- The image alt tags

The user interface is very straight-forward; just browse to the page that you would like to review and press the ‘Analyze’ button, and all the data about the page will be presented to you in the form of 4 tabs: Source, Meta, Tags and Title.

In terms of page content analysis, this app offers two features: the body text listing and phrases window.

The developers explain these two features below:

The Body Analysis Pane – Body Text Listing

This page shows the text that is extracted from the entire page. If a title tag was set for the document, its text will appear here at the top too. The number of words are counted and displayed as well as a metric called the “Stop Word Ratio”. The stop word ratio is simply the percentage of the document ignored by search engines, for instance: “23.24% of my document is ignored by the search engines.” proSEO uses a proprietary list of German and English stop words.

The Body Analysis Pane – Phrases Window

The phrases window allows you to adjust the size of the phrase the analyzer, determined from the content. You must use the slider to adjust this, and the phrase length field does not accept direct entry. You can remove stop words from the phrases by selecting the Stopwords Removed switch. Only phrases at the desired length are reported along with the number of times that they appear. When you remove stopwords, there may be repeat phrases in the list; this is normal operation.

In terms of link analysis, the app will list all the outbound links on the page, and is able to differentiate between text links and image links by placing a small pin next to the image links. It also can display the anchor text of each text link and alt tags in the case of image links.

All in all this is a useful app, but one should decide how often this kind of analysis is required on the move, because the app price is on the more expensive side of iTunes pricing range.

Happy holidays once again
