The first few catalogues from travel agents have already arrived in mailboxes throughout Denmark, full of glitzy pictures of white sand and sapphire oceans. But when it comes to finding inspiration for the summer holidays, Danes prefer the internet.
A survey conducted by loyaltygroup.dk found that 24 percent of Danes get inspiration mainly from travel websites, and 33 percent expect to book their holidays through these websites this year. In comparison, only eight percent reported that they got their inspiration from catalogues sent out by agencies.
The flexibility and ability to put together the perfect holiday for specific needs and desires is one of the main reasons for using the internet when it comes to booking a holiday.
Also, being able to decide exactly where, when and how long the holiday is for, is a high priority when the Danes book their holiday over the internet, indicating that online travel sites may need to offer more flexibility and fewer package solutions if they want to continue attracting online traffic.
Another survey from Danmarks Statestik showed that 65 percent of internet users in Denmark used the internet in association with travelling activities, such as booking hotels and flights and finding holiday destinations, in 2009.
