Web portal Yahoo! has announced plans to host content in six regional Indian languages as well as the current offerings of Hindi and English. The plans look set to be put in place by the end of 2011.

India has an estimated 50 million internet users, and is one of the fastest growing online markets expected to reach a massive 240 million in the next five years. 73% of the Indian online population have access to Yahoo! and India Managing Director Arun Tadanki pointed out that there is "huge opportunity in regional language content" after seeing Hindu news traffic overtaking English news traffic.
There are 22 recognised languages spoken in India including Bengali, Hindi, Punjabi and Urdu.
